Fall Program for Gifted Elementary Students
From New Pathways Educational Services
This program includes academic study in Geometry and Poetry as well as organized social interaction activities and games. Geometry: This hands-on unit covers the history of geometry, and its essential components and applications as a subject that deals with the measurement of the earth. There will be an overview of the contributions to geometry of various ancient and modern cultures. Reference will also be made to the role that geometry plays in construction, architecture, astronomy, and art.
Students will be introduced to nine of the most common geometric solids, such as prisms, pyramids, and ovoids, noting their various characteristics, and relating all new understanding to the real-world environment.
Students will create their own reference booklets with sketches of geometric plane figures that they construct themselves using a set of geometry instruments. The unit of study will progress sequentially from the names of single lines, to the relationship between two lines, and then to figures that can be enclosed by three lines, namely the seven triangles. Afterwards students will study and draw quadrilaterals of various kinds, followed by polygons from pentagons to decagons.
The class will also deal with terminology for parts of a circle (beyond radius and diameter) and will cover formulas for calculating the area and volume of various figures.
Class supplies: Set of geometry instruments, small scissors, pencils, erasers and sharpeners, a box of coloured pencil crayons, a duotang containing about 50 sheets of ruled paper and 50 sheets of blank white paper.
Poetry: It has been said that there has never been a civilization without poetry. It is one of the earliest forms of writing and continues to play a key role in the lives of many cultures. Students sometimes find poetry difficult to read, and consider it simply as that kind of writing that doesn’t reach to the margins. This program hopes to cultivate an appreciation for poetry and what it adds to our lives. Students will be introduced to a series of classic and modern poems in a variety of subjects such as animals, history, nature, human relationships, beauty, and humour.
Each poem will be subject to a process of close reading, so that students may fully extract the meaning of the poem, as well as the poet’s intention, feeling, and tone. The students will be shown the value of various poetic devices, such as metaphor, alliteration and onomatopoeia, and how these enhance their enjoyment of the poem.
Students will write their own poetry, starting with forms that are usually fairly accessible, such as limericks and haiku poetry.
They will make a selection of their favourite poems and write a response to each, stating what they enjoy about the poem and what makes it noteworthy. At the end of the class this will be combined into an anthology of their favourite poems.
Cognasium: through social interaction children will communicate in a stress free environment, increase self-expression, and become exposed to differing ideas. For example they will participate in talking circle, debating, role playing/improv and problem solving. They will engage and develop their thinking skills with others in a respectful organized way. By playing board games they will have fun while developing powers of observation, visual-spatial skills, logical reasoning, and critical thinking.
