I am a parent and a retired teacher but still hold BC certification. I have taught over 30 years as a classroom teacher and as a specialist in the field of reading and special education. I am a part time teacher supervisor for the Learning Disabilities Association Frazer South; Read Reading and Real Math Program. I have my Bachelor and Master's of Education from McGill University. In the past, I have also enjoyed teaching English as a Second Language and can support in this area.
I can provide consultation on Individual Education Plans and Psycho-educational testing. As well, I do level B testing and assessment, academic levels, giftedness.
When my daughter was growing up, I participated in an eight week parent support course session at the Vancouver Children's Hospital which I found extremely helpful. I am now realizing my retirement passion which is helping others with parenting, the most important job on the planet. I want to share what I have learned over a life time of teaching and parenting. Over the years, I have worked with many students who have attention and anxiety issues preparing their individual education plans and consulting with parents. I am also a member of CHADD- Children and Adults with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. This year I attended their Annual International Conference and acquired over 40 hours of course work.
I am a parent of a gifted child, now in university. I have always been interested in and put ahead of academics the emotional needs of children. Thus I became interested in the Group SENG, Supporting the Emotional Needs of the Gifted, and took their facilitator training to work with parents.
I am a strong advocate for students with Leaning Disabilities or Differences and believe that anyone can learn under proper instruction and motivation. Part of what I also do is support you as a parent in advocating for your child if that is what is needed at a school based team level. Learning is essential in today’s world but more importantly it is regarded as a life long pursuit which leads to self discovery and happiness. If a child is not learning or if his emotional needs are not being met, then we must do our outmost to support him or her.
Teaching is a creative endeavor and my love of teaching has led me to continue this path. I am privileged to continue to learn from students as they learn from me. I have a great deal of respect for them and trust that their strengths, will carry them through. I teach to the individual child and not a set curriculum, although I can support the homework aspect.
I work co-operatively and can refer you to other qualified colleagues who have further expertise for example using the Montessori Method of teaching (tactile, visual, manipulative, discovery) and the Orton Gillingham method of reading. I am also qualified to teach a similar phonetic method called Wilson Reading and have this certification in addition to the course Webster's Writing.
I live in South Surrey with my five pets, I am an avid reader and writer, I love to travel and spend time with family and friends.
